Each spring UVA Biology research labs welcome regional public middle school students into their labs to learn about the innovative and exciting work our scientists do.

We held our first annual Interactive Biology Awareness Program (formerly called the STEM Middle School Visit) in February 2020, in which more than 130 students from two regional middle schools visited the UVa Department of Biology. Students toured two laboratories and visited several learning booths.

Learning booths included:

Comparative neuroscience of vocal learning

Talk to a scientist

Natural selection (with M&Ms and Skittles)

Genetics of model organisms

Build a neuron

Backyard brains (video game controller with muscle movement)
